These minor niggles aside, the woodwork is certainly tough enough to cope with non-stop touring and so is the substantial aluminium chassis, which has welded corners and a separate base plate fixed to the cabinet to create a totally screened enclosure. Does it have an etching of an actual fat buddah on the face plate is the way to tell – the older ones do. Sounded awesome with my Tokai Since then, Peavey has taken on manufacturing and marketing duties whereas previously, according to Peavey, Budda’s manufacturing had been subcontracted to several outside sources.

With this professional-level head, Budda has specifically aimed for a couple of classic tones to share out between the two switchable channels. The V we have here offers a welcoming old-school aesthetic, courtesy of the smart two-tone tuxedo vinyl covering, purple Budda logo and cheese wedge knobs. Their tone and drive controls are very superdfive and the slightest tweak in the wrong direction can render your guitar sound either totally lifeless or ready to punch holes in the wall. Those amps continue to spearhead the Budda amp line, covering a fair amount of sonic ground, from crisp cleans to versatile modern overdrive tones. As mentioned above – there’s always a bit of grit in the cleans – which I really like. Although he has been playing for longer than he cares sreies remember and is now officially an ‘oldie’, he is still mad for all things guitar related and when not busy in his studio he’s learning new songs, practising bluegrass guitar, painting his house and taking his dogs out.

Budda amps have their own sound going on, the V delivers a huge sonic punch and blends boutique cleans with classic rock distortions. The main PCB is double-sided, through-plated and adequately supported by 14 metal stand-offs. I sold mine to fund another purchase – but I would buy one again for the lead tone. The only effect I relied upon was a Boss digital delay in the effects loop. As we push the drive knob towards 12 o’clock we quickly go from country clean to a gritty blues rhythm tone, which responds brilliantly with single-coil-equipped guitars and has a squashy, American tonality characterised by those 6V6s – it’s like you’re squeezing the notes out of skperdrive amp.

Changing guitars to a Strat was a different story, and there was masses of clean headroom and just-on-the-edge-of-breakup sound available, tweakable further by adjusting the drive control.
