Erikson’s ability to shape multilayered characters is genius. Dude had the weirdest psychological profile – clearly mental unbalanced, which made for some interesting confrontations with the Gods. I am itching to get back to the “Malazan Group”. View all 70 comments. I have yet to come across a story as epic as this one! This may or may not change when George finishes his series in , zing! Not particularly impressive, but still good.
I think if you read it till half way through you may have changed your mind – It does eventually settle down to advance the plot to what I think is a very satisfactory conclusion. His third person talking perspective is kind of annoying, but funny. I just wanted more and more of the Lore. Unfortunately though, some things didn’t make sense, and most specifically the Empire’s plans. Paran, Sorry, Tattersail, Lorn, Toc Buddy read with my science partner, Sade. But the third time I tried it just clicked and I enjoyed it. Each sub-book and chapter were preceded by an epigraph, in the form of poetry or a passage from various in-world literature, with an allegory to the main story.
Sanderson fans will hate that – sorry – not meant to be an insult, but that is indicative of Sanderson’s style. And a true one, as well. As I mentioned in one of my reviews, I need a hero to root for and I had a problem with that because I couldn’t decide on one.

gardems Erikson wastes few words. If it takes multiple readings and online chapter discussions just to understand what the heck is going on then that’s a f Joe is great at getting you involved and keeping your interest peaked, and for me has some really good characters.

I was actually leaning towards a 3 stars rating The first few books are mostly sectioned with different sets of characters. I must say that I get annoyed by the amount of detail that goes into some of gardesn back stories, however, the world is amazing and the characters are easy to connect to. Let me start with the good parts.
You will either love it or absolutely hate adore despise relish it. I’ve flipped through the glossaries but am still confused. Thus we get to meet the The Bridgburners lead by Whiskeyjack, the resident mage Quick Ben, Tattersail, the warrior mage lady, and the newly added Captain Paran, who yhe to be the character around whom most action seems to be happening. He writes each malazqn well. However, was the story itself hard to follow?

It’s so good of him not to exhaust his wretched offspring characters by keeping them busy with all kinds of active stuff all the time. It will be remiss of me, however, not to admit having to refer to the famous Tor.
Gradually though one can detect the inevitable coalescing of the various plot lines of all these characters onto a common path. One on hand, Erikson pretends like their identity is a huge mystery, while who they are is clear to the reader from the very first chapter. Those same feelings came back to me as I read Gardens of the Moon, holding my fingers in the front and back of the book, flipping to and from maps and glossaries and character lists learning all that I could.
Only flag comments that clearly need our attention. Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. My “too-read” pile has literally over books in it so I can be spending my time reading something I’m enjoying more.

However, I am going to say, that I think that Abercrombie is ahead on character building skills. Making sense of that is happening is half the fun. The Malazan universe is bordering upon genius. The amount of characters, magic system, history, plots and subplots is on a level of its own.

Gardens of the Moon is a great book that you will enjoy reading, as long as you like Swords and Sorcery style fantasy anyway. I eynopsis compare the two as their styles are so different. The Bridgeburners in particular Quick Ben. Dana Ilie David – proud Gleeman in Branwen’s adventuring party wrote: I jest, I jest.

I look forward to seeing where he goes with it all in the subsequent books. My future Malazan reviews will consist of none or barely of what the plot syynopsis about. I don’t play video games.
