This is not a film for the impatient viewer. There is a touch of director Terrence Mallick’s cinema as he connects human actions with nature a heartbroken wife runs into a glen and collapses trying to clutch a tree trunk. Like Bresson before him not to say that…. Something surreal, somehow related to the hymn “Silent night”? From its paradoxical title Silent Light to its surrealistic resurrection scene, this movie will leave you mesmerized–and highly rewarded if you’ve afforded it the chance to move you. All is not well.
The film’s opening shot was so stunning that after the 6th minute the audience who grasped what was happening began clapping, having savored the effect.

The last time I recall a similar involuntary reaction from an audience was when Godfrey Reggio’s “Koyaanisqatsi” was screened decades ago in Mumbai at another International Film Festival. Teenage Juan crashes his family’s car into a telegraph pole on the outskirts of town, and then scours the streets searching for someone to help him fix it. I am aware that I’m prone to hyperbole often, but it is one of the most beautiful things I have seen in a film, and viewing it in the darkness late at night I felt tears welling up at the sheer wonder of this cinematic collision of beautiful framing and warming lighting.

Reygadas communicates in a superbly controlled cinematic idiom and conjures up a hypnotic address to the viewer. Elizabeth Fehr as Madre. Cornelio Wtellet as Johan. A study of the slow evolution of light, from night, to dawn, to day, Carlos Reygadas expertly utilizes cinema’s ability to introduce its viewers to diverse experiences of time.
Facing the grief over the loss of her son, she discovers new bonds of friendship and small miracles.
