Instead of just guising an old story in contemporary garb, Winterbottom truly reinterprets it and in doing so finds resonance with a modern audience. After a night out with friends, Jay tracks her down and rescues her from the unwanted and escalating attentions of two men on the street. A composite character created by Winterbottom, he’s drawn from the two opposing love interests in Thomas Hardy’s novel. The early scenes in which Jay has to overcome the language barrier to get Trishna’s attention are a naturalistic joy, yet even as things take a more dramatic turn, Pinto and particularly Ahmed remain startlingly believable. Part of that, of course, is the source material; Winterbottom, who also wrote the script, has transposed Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles to modern India, where class differences still hold the kind of sway they did in Hardy’s time in England. Winterbottom’s adaptation insists upon its modern setting, and refuses to impose Hardy’s hundred-year-old dynamic onto it. He reacts by asking her why she didn’t think he had a right to know and gets progressively angry when he thinks of all the times she could have told him about it.
